I get this question a lot so i make a blog about it :)
For knife users your stone is not as hard as for razors from lv 2 to lv 3,5, actually i dont flatten my stones for knife that often i try to wore out stone evenly and knife dont really need 100% flat stone except for ura on back side for single bevelled knifes but i use hard stone for this :)
So for razors its very important that you stone is very flat but very smooth too but not for all stones the softer stones like lv 3,5 or 4 they dont need that much smoothness because they are soft and usually pre-polishers they will make mud very easy and remove scratches from stone with blade it self.
For very hard stones like 4,5 or 5 it is very important that you stone is as smooth as possible ! very hard stones can chip you blade if loose particle come of of big scratches from the stone, so the smoother you hard stone is the finer it is too :)
So how to smoothen the stone ?
First you need to flatten it with 300,600,140 dmt, atoma, sandpaper, it dose not madder
But finish with highest grit as possible, then you need to smoothen it with something with higher grit 6k or 8k, 10k stone is ok, you can also smoothen with you nagura or other natural stone.
You stone have to be like mirro when it is dry and have some reflection.
Small holes or big single scratches is ok they dont affect sharpening that much so dont so dont bother to flatten them out :)
I think thats it let me know if i forgot something or any questions !
